They gained the right to a free vote first off which really let more people be able to vote. The people also got a peace of mind that they could not randomly be levyed by the king without the parlament approving it. The were now able to petition the king and like our law, they were protected from creul and unusual punishment. Like most, I feel that Peter the great achieved more. He was the one who built the new town St. Petersburg, and he basically built it from the ground up. Catherine just continued his palace for him when he was gone. He also helped the social status of women by making them to be less socially isolated. He gave Russia acess to te baltic sea, and he also ruled longer then Catherine the Great. When Peter died she focused more on the art aspect of the country. She supported art, literature, science and theater while Peter focused on the Goverment. Although Catherine earned more land from the west, peter took time to learn things from his fellow citizens like learning about ship building in a Dutch ship yard. Some positive of an absolute ruler is that there is no issues with power, and one man (or woman) controls everything which leads to no confusion as to what will be done. That is the only positive I can really find right now. There are many negatives, the biggest of which is that one person controlling everything wears out a nation and can lead to very little nationalism and patriotism. People are less likely to want to do anything for an absolute ruler who is causing more harm then help to the ruled country.
